20 Years: Master of Law & Business Celebrates Anniversary

Bucerius Law School, Hochschule für Rechtswissenschaft gGmbH

The unique international Bucerius Master of Law and Business Program, celebrates its 20th anniversary.

During a festive ceremony today, Bucerius Law School presented diplomas to the graduates of its 20th class. The Master of Law and Business Program offered in cooperation with the WHU Otto Beisheim School of Management prepares young legal and business professionals for international careers in which an understanding of both legal and business concepts as well as intercultural skills are essential. Its goal is to build bridges – between disciplines and across cultures.

In addition to its undergraduate law program, which leads to an LL.B. degree and the Erste Prüfung/Staatsexamen, Bucerius Law School admits around 40 students from across the globe to complete the intense one year MLB/LLM Program. Integrated into the interdisciplinary curriculum is an internship period which helps prepare international students for a career in Germany or other countries.

Prof. Christopher Bisping, LLM, Dean of the MLB Program: “I am proud and grateful that, for five years now, I have had the privilege of working with fantastic young people from all over the world. Our students appreciate the international, interdisciplinary, and practice-oriented nature of the MLB program. In addition to academic excellence, we place a strong emphasis on the practical relevance of the course content. Our graduates are therefore highly valued by their internship hosts and future employers in Germany, Europe, and around the world. The Bucerius atmosphere is both challenging and supportive. In our master’s program, we embody this through close collaboration among students, faculty, and staff.”

People from All Over the World in Hamburg

Over the past 20 years, approximately 800 graduates from 105 countries have completed the MLB/LLM Program. The graduates work in a wide variety of industries and fields: in legal departments or in management at large companies, at startups, in law firms, and at international organizations. Every year, some of them stay in Germany and advance their careers here, while others seek new challenges in other European countries or return to their home countries. Many of them embark on a new career path for example, moving from the legal profession into management roles or receiving promotions.

Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Jörn Axel Kämmerer, Vice President of Bucerius Law School and Head of International Affairs: “Since its founding, Bucerius Law School has viewed itself as an internationally oriented institution of higher education. It has particularly lived up to this aspiration through its Master Program, which has a strong reputation and as a cornerstone of the school, is held in high regard by us. The MLB alumni network also play a significant role in this regard.”

Business Law in All Its Facets

The core subjects of this practice-oriented, English-language program are business administration and business law. These subjects are taught from a comparative and interdisciplinary perspective, always against the backdrop of the growing challenges posed by modern technologies such as artificial intelligence so that lawyers and managers can work together to solve the problems of the future.

The MLB Program emphasizes business and legal issues without focusing on any one country. It introduces synergies into its curriculum by taking one over-arching topic, the development of an enterprise, and analyzing that development in its primary aspects. The curriculum often pairs courses that treat the same fundamental topic from both law and business perspectives.

Program Director for law is Professor Dr. Carsten Jungmann, LL.M. (Yale), M.Sc. in Finance (Leicester) and Jun.-Professor Dr. Barbara Stage of WHU – Otto Beisheim School of Management serves as Program Director for business administration.
