Music and Multimedia Rights Management Solutions for the Internet, DVD and CDs
SUNNYVALE, CA and ERLANGEN, GERMANY - February 2 InterTrust Technologies Corporation, the MetaTrust UtilityTM, and the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits (Fraunhofer IIS) of Erlangen, Germany, announced a strategic alliance to provide rights management and protection solutions for music and multimedia content over the Internet, DVD, CD-ROM and other media.
Fraunhofer IIS and InterTrust® will work together to establish InterTrust's MetaTrustTM technologies and services as the preferred digital rights management platform for appropriate applications using Fraunhofer IIS-developed
formats, such as the MP3 and AAC music formats.
"InterTrust's rights management technology provides a multi-vendor, interoperable system for persistently
securing content and managing its use and usage consequences. It is the most powerful rights management
technology, and the only rights system not requiring interaction with central servers," said Dr. Karlheinz
Brandenburg, head of department, Multimedia, at Fraunhofer IIS." InterTrust technology complements our broad
suite of high-fidelity, low bitrate codecs."
"Both InterTrust and Fraunhofer IIS have developed advanced and fundamentally important technology and intellectual property through diligent research," said Victor Shear, chairman and CEO of InterTrust. "The InterTrust/Fraunhofer IIS alliance will produce solutions that enable music and multimedia content businesses to exploit electronic commerce to the fullest."
"Together, we can produce a set of technologies that enable flexible, responsive and creative business models that support the rights and interests of stakeholders and consumers, including privacy and individual freedom of action," said Shear.

New York City, Washington, D.C., and the United Kingdom.
Fraunhofer IIS
Fraunhofer IIS is the leading research laboratory in the area of audio coding. Since the start of the audio coding
work 10 years ago, Fraunhofer IIS has participated actively in the development of audio compression algorithms.
Major parts of MPEG-1 Layer-3 (MP3), the most popular audio format on the Internet, have been devised at its
headquarters in Erlangen, Germany.
The MPEG-2 Advanced Audio Coding (AAC) algorithm, which is the most efficient coding algorithm currently
available, was also developed in cooperation with experts from Fraunhofer IIS: AAC offers a 16 fold data
reduction while maintaining CD quality.
In addition to audio coding technology, Fraunhofer IIS is also working on data-hiding technologies for use in
watermarking and fingerprinting systems. Fraunhofer IIS is also active in international efforts to develop methods
to technically manage and protect intellectual property, including the MPEG-4 work on Intellectual Property
Management & Protection (IPMP), the Audio Engineering Society's (AES) activities on "Internet Audio Delivery
Systems" and the Secure Digital Music Initiative (SDMI) being initiated by the Recording Industry Association of
America (RIAA), the Recording Industry Association of Japan (RIAJ) and the International Federation of the
Phonographic Industries (IFPI). For further information see http://www.iis.fhg.de/amm/
