New Master Degree Programme: Industrial Safety and Security

Tobias Kolb Referat Kommunikation
Hochschule Augsburg - Hochschule für angewandte Wissenschaften

Augsburg University of Applied Sciences introduces interdisciplinary Master programme in safety and security in Industry 4.0

Are complex production networks in the industry safe from hacker attacks? What kind of safety or security loopholes exist in remote maintenance in the field of plant and machine construction? How do you protect companies from spear phishing and social engineering? The “Industrial Safety and Security” Master programme, which will be offered at Augsburg University of Applied Sciences from the summer semester of 2017, deals with various aspects of safety and security in the field of Industry 4.0. As of now, prospective students may apply for this degree programme taught in both German and English in the application portal of Augsburg University of Applied Sciences.

This degree programme is the only one of its kind in Bavaria, and is offered as an interdisciplinary programme at the Faculties of Electrical Engineering, Computer Science and Business. It is aimed at graduates of Bachelor programmes in the fields of engineering and computer science, as well as graduates of business-related degree programmes with a focus on technology. Over the course of three semesters, students acquire the skills necessary to come up with interdisciplinary solutions to safety and security problems in the areas of industrial automation, control systems and critical infrastructure. This practical degree programme focuses on a range of subjects including IT security, data protection, functional safety, IT law and employee management. After completing this degree programme, graduates can take on positions with a high level of responsibility, such as the position of security analyst in the IT sector, developer of safe and secure production and assembly lines, and “Safety and Security Consultant” at management and process consulting firms.

    Structure of Degree Programme
The basics of industrial safety and security from a technical, organisational and legal point of view are covered in the first semester of this Master programme. This allows students to understand important interdisciplinary aspects of safety and security in Industry 4.0. In the second semester, students acquire a more in-depth knowledge and strengthen this knowledge by carrying out a large-scale interdisciplinary project. In the third semester, the students then write their Master thesis based on a complex topic from the field of safety and or security, often in close cooperation with a company,. They also have the option to specialize even further by taking an elective.

The extraordinary thing about this degree programme is that students are given practical training in using a networked automated production system in the “Industrial Safety and Security” lab. Security problems that may arise in companies, such as a large hacker attack on sensitive IT data, are simulated directly in this lab. The students also work in close cooperation with scientists from the HSASec research group for IT security and digital forensics, and the HSAOps optimization and operations management research group. Scientists from the technology transfer center in Nördlingen, who carry out research on various aspects of the production industry, are also participating in this new master degree programme.

    Application
You can still apply to the “Industrial Safety and Security” (in German “Industrielle Sicherheit”) degree programme for summer semester 2017 using the application portal of Augsburg University of Applied Sciences until Sunday, 15 January 2017 at www.hs-augsburg.de/bewerbung.

For any questions about this new degree programme, please send an e-mail to our faculty academic adviser, Prof. Dr. Helia Hollmann: helia.hollmann@hs-augsburg.de.

    Help

Search / advanced search of the idw archives
    Combination of search terms

You can combine search terms with and, or and/or not, e.g. Philo not logy.

    Brackets

You can use brackets to separate combinations from each other, e.g. (Philo not logy) or (Psycho and logy).

    Phrases

Coherent groups of words will be located as complete phrases if you put them into quotation marks, e.g. “Federal Republic of Germany”.

    Selection criteria

You can also use the advanced search without entering search terms. It will then follow the criteria you have selected (e.g. country or subject area).

If you have not selected any criteria in a given category, the entire category will be searched (e.g. all subject areas or all countries).
