The Times Higher Education (THE) World University Ranking is published annually and is one of the most influential university rankings, alongside the QS World University Ranking and the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU).
TU Dresden is now ranked 155th, having improved its position by 9 places as compared to the previous year.
In 2017, a total of 1,102 universities worldwide were ranked, with 44 German universities listed.
20 German universities are among the Top 200, 2 higher education institutions less than in 2016.
In the THE ranking, TU Dresden improved by one place to the 16th position in Germany’s domestic ranking. It is the only university in Saxony to be listed in the THE ranking.
Prof Hans Müller-Steinhagen, Rector of TU Dresden, states: “We are well on the way to achieving our long-term goal of becoming one of the top 100 universities worldwide. Global competition among universities is becoming increasingly fierce, with intensive investments in the higher education sector, particularly in Asia. In the past, we have been ranked around the 300 mark. However, in recent year we have been able to keep up a rapid upwards trend. At the level that we have now reached, the competition is even more intense, so that an improvement of nine places is an important signal, that our overall strategy places the right emphases, both for our university and the DRESDEN-concept research alliance.”
The THE Ranking evaluates in particular the main tasks of the top universities worldwide i.e. teaching, research, knowledge transfer and internationalisation. The quality of teaching, the citation frequency in scientific journals and research are all included in the evaluation at a rate of 30% for each parameter.
