Die Sensitivität von KATRIN von 0.2 eV/c2 wird es erlauben, sowohl zwischen hierarchischen und quasi-degenerierten Neutrinomassenszenarien zu unterscheiden, als auch den ganzen kosmologisch relevanten Neutrinomassenbereich zu untersuchen. Die Hauptkomponenten des KATRIN- Experiments, die fensterlose, gasförmige, molekulare Tritiumquelle und das 23 m lange Hauptspektrometer, sind in der Bauphase. Erste Tests mit dem schon aufgebauten Vorspektrometer wurden erfolgreich durchgeführt. Nach einer Einleitung über den Stand der Neutrinooszillationsexperimente und die Neutrinomassenbestimmung werden der aktuelle Status des KATRIN-Experiments und seine erwartete Empfindlichkeit auf die Neutrinomasse diskutiert.
