Mosmann entdeckte zwei Subtypen von Helfer T-Lymphozyten, die Th1- und Th2-Zellen. Nach dem von ihm als Th1-/Th2-Paradigma bezeichneten Konzept entstehen Allergien als Folge eines verschobenen Gleichgewichts in Richtung der Th2-Zellen. Diese Erkenntnis bildet die Grundlage für die Entwicklung neuer Behandlungsmöglichkeiten, auch von chronischen Entzündungskrankheiten und Autoimmunkrankheiten.
