Die internationale "Berlin 6 Open Access Conference" ist die fünfte Konferenz in einer Reihe, die auf die Verabschiedung der Berliner Erklärung über den freien Zugang zu wissenschaftlicher Information im Jahr 2003 folgte. Auf dem Programm stehen rechtliche und technologische Aspekte ebenso wie Fragen der Finanzierung. Es werden Geschäftsmodelle diskutiert und die Rolle von Fachgesellschaften beleuchtet. Weitere Schwerpunkte bilden das Verhältnis von Open Access und Forschung sowie neue Formen der Kommunikation im akademischen Wissenschaftsbetrieb.
