Aksum war ein mächtiges Königreich, das 700 bis 800 Jahre Bestand hatte (1. Jh. v. Chr. - 7. Jh. n. Chr.). Es war nach dem Alten Ägypten und dem antiken Sudan das dritte afrikanische Reich mit einer Hochkultur und trieb Handel mit den Ländern am Mittelmeer, im Persischen Golf und gar bis nach Indien und China. Das Griechische war die lingua franca, Aksum übernahm im 4. Jh. n. Chr. das Christentum und hatte als einziges afrikanisches Land eine eigene Münzproduktion (spätes 3. Jh. bis frühes 7. Jh. n. Chr.). Besonders in der Architektur vollbrachte es einmalige Leistungen. Seine Erforschung steht erst am Anfang.
