At first sight the diversity among the 5-600 languages of our globe seems to be without limits. Different languages have totally different inventories of words and also differ strikingly in their grammatical and phonological structures. A closer look reveals however, an underlying unity within this confusing diversity and shows that languages do not differ from each other in random and unpredictable ways. The goal of this lecture is to identify and analyse such patterns and limits of variation. The examples will be taken as much as possible from the European languages familiar to the audience. For students in English, German, French, Italian or Spanish, the lecture provides on opportunity to look at these languages from a comparative perspective.

You can combine search terms with and, or and/or not, e.g. Philo not logy.
You can use brackets to separate combinations from each other, e.g. (Philo not logy) or (Psycho and logy).
Coherent groups of words will be located as complete phrases if you put them into quotation marks, e.g. “Federal Republic of Germany”.
You can also use the advanced search without entering search terms. It will then follow the criteria you have selected (e.g. country or subject area).
If you have not selected any criteria in a given category, the entire category will be searched (e.g. all subject areas or all countries).
