Im einzelnen sollen Musils Utopien des "exakten Lebens" (als Wissenschaft) und des "Essayismus" (als Lebenskunst); die Utopie oder Dystopie der ironisch präsentierten Dauerkommunikation ("Parallelaktion") und die Utopie des "anderen Zustands" (als Bemühen um eine "ekstatische Sozietät" vorgestellt werden.
Am Schluss wird Musils "Utopie der induktiven Gesinnung" im Zentrum stehen. Hier knüpft Musil an seine Überlegungen zum "exakten Leben" an, indem er gegenüber erkenntnistheoretischen Diskussionen zum Problem des Hypothetischen und Induktiven in den empirischen Naturwissenschaften stärker das Soziale in der Ausrichtung auf ein gesellschaftliches "summum bonum" betont.
