Japan ist in jeder Phase des Modernisierungsdiskurses - also nicht nur für die klassische Modernisierungstheorie - ein besonders problematischer und herausfordernder Fall gewesen. Es hat dabei insbesondere in der sich seit Mitte der neunziger Jahre entfaltenden Diskussion über "multiple modernities" eine Schlüsselrolle gespielt.
