Der Vortrag beschäftigt sich mit dem Verhältnis von Ethik, Wissenschaft und Politik in den aktuellen Gentechnologie-Debatten der USA. Ausgehend von einer Analyse der Diskussionen im amerikanischen Rat für Bioethik (President's Council on Bioethics) argumentiert Freeman, dass sich hier eine neue Form politischen Handelns manifestiert, in der ethische Normen zunehmend als wirkungsvolles wissenschaftspolitisches Machtmittel eingesetzt werden. Er schlägt vor, solche Entscheidungsprozesse unter dem Begriff der "ethischen Technokratie" zu fassen.
Erik Freeman ist Politikwissenschaftler (M.A., Cambridge University) und arbeitet am Department of Political Science am MIT. Er hat unter anderem längere Forschungsaufenthalte am Institut für Wissenschafts- und Technikforschung (Bielefeld) und beim Europäischen Parlament verbracht. Erik Freeman ist zur Zeit Gast am WZB in der Projektgruppe "Wissenschaftspolitik".
Der Vortrag wird in englischer Sprache gehalten.
