Professor Dr. Klaus Osterrieder, Leiter des Instituts für Virologie am Fachbereich Veterinärmedizin der Freien Universität Berlin, und Professor for Virology am Department for Microbiology and Immunology der Cornell University in den USA, erforscht die Molekulare Pathogenese von Virusinfektionen bei Haustieren. Die Entwicklung von Impfstoffen sowie die Diagnostik von Viruserkrankungen der Tiere - etwa die der Influenzaviren bei Haustieren - ist ein weiterer Schwerpunkt seiner Arbeit.
Professor Dr. Lothar H. Wieler, Geschäftsführender Direktor des Instituts für Mikrobiologie und Tierseuchen am Fachbereich Veterinärmedizin der Freien Universität, beschäftigt sich mit der Erforschung von Zoonosen - jenen Infektionserregern, die von Tieren auf Menschen übertragen werden können. Wielers Forschungsschwerpunkt ist die "Molekulare Epidemiologie", die Analyse der Übertragungswege und Evolution von Infektionserregern.
