FRANKFURT. Bakterien und Pilze produzieren eine Fülle von Naturstoffen, von denen viele für den Menschen nützlich und hilfreich sind - etwa antibiotisch wirksame Substanzen, mit denen sich Mikroorganismen gegen ihre Konkurrenten im Boden wehren. Bisher ist erst ein Bruchteil dieser Stoffe erforscht; unter anderem aus deshalb, weil sich viele Boden-Organismen nicht in Kultur züchten lassen.
Die vielfach noch verborgenen Schätze der Naturstoffe zu heben und ihre Wirksamkeit gezielt zu verbessern, ist die Aufgabe des neuen Merck-Stiftungsprofessors für Molekulare Biotechnologie, Prof. Helge Bode. Seine Antrittsvorlesung an der Goethe-Universität ist zugleich Auftakt eines halbtägigen Symposiums, in dem die Universitäten Frankfurt und Darmstadt und die Firma Merck ihre Erfahrungen auf dem Gebiet der Biotechnologie austauschen.
