Ziel des Alexander von Humboldt Instituts für Internet und Gesellschaft ist es, die Wechselwirkungen zwischen Internet und Gesellschaft besser zu verstehen und allen Gruppen die Mitgestaltung der digital vernetzten Zukunft zu ermöglichen.
Gründungsgesellschafter des Alexander von Humboldt Institutes für Internet und Gesellschaft (HIIG)sind die Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (HU), die Universität der Künste Berlin (UdK) sowie das Wissenschaftszentrum Berlin für Sozialforschung (WZB). Das Hamburger Hans-Bredow Institut (HBI) ist integrierter Kooperationspartner.
