An Islamic Democratic State?

WZB "Lectures on Democracy" by Abdolkarim Soroush

Abdolkarim Soroush is internationally respected as one of the most important reform voices of the inner-Islamic discourse. Initially a supporter of the 1979 Islamic Revolution led by Ayatollah Khomeini, Soroush has increasingly become more critical of the fundamentalization of Islam and its claim to state power.

As part of the international series "Lectures on Democracy", organized by John Keane and Wolfgang Merkel at the WZB, Abdolkarim Soroush will talk about the theoretical compatibility and practical feasibility of "Islamic Democratic Rule". He will argue that a "minimal democracy" can conceivably be assimilated into an "Islamic Democratic Constitution". The "maximalist" demand for a "liberal democracy" on the other hand appears to create insur-mountable incompatibilities for a synthesis of Islam and democracy.

Thus, Abdolkarim Soroush will address one of the widely and fiercely discussed topics in present-day theoretical democracy discourse. To what extent can democracy abandon liberal core principles without giving up substance?

Abdolkarim Soroush studied analytical chemistry, history and philosophy of science in London. In Teheran, he focussed his research on Islamic philosophy and Islamic mysticism. He taught philosophy of science and politics as well as Sufism in Teheran, at Harvard and at Princeton. Currently, he is a Fellow at the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin.

WZB "Lectures on Democracy" are organized by John Keane and Wolfgang Merkel
