Teilansicht des gigantischen Nebels NGC 3603 (einer »HII-Region«) mit seinem zentralen, nur eine Million Jahre alten kompakten Sternhaufen. Falschfarbenbild aus Beobachtungen der »Wide Field/Planetary Camera 2« des Weltraumteleskops Hubble. Die dominante grüne Farbe zeigt dabei Licht an, das ausgesendet wird, wenn ionisierter Wasserstoff sein fehlendes Elektron zurückbekommt (»Rekombinationslinie H-Alpha«). Das Blickfeld beträgt rund 160 Bogensekunden mal 160 Bogensekunden. Die gezackte Bildstruktur ergibt sich aus der Anordnung der Detektoren der Wide Field/Planetary Camera.
