Ein Porphyrinmolekül mit einem Kobaltatom auf einer magnetisierten Nickelschicht. Oben: das magnetische Moment des Kobaltatoms (schwarzer Pfeil) folgt der Magnetisierung der Nickelschicht (grüne Pfeile) – das Molekül ist 'eingeschaltet'. Unten: Verbindet sich das Kobaltatom mit einem Stickstoffmonoxid-Molekül (NO), das auch ein magnetisches Moment hat, heben sich die Momente auf. Das Moment des Kobalt folgt nicht mehr der Magnetisierung - das Molekül ist 'ausgeschaltet'.
