Bestäubung ist eine Schlüsselfunktion im Ökosystem und damit Basis für den Erhalt der biologischen Vielfalt. Zu den bestäubenden Insekten zählen nicht nur Honigbienen sondern eine Vielzahl anderer Insekten von Wildbienen über Schwebfliegen (siehe Foto) bis hin zu Schmetterlingen. Etwa 60 bis 80 Prozent der Wildpflanzen und 35 Prozent der weltweiten Agrarproduktion hängen davon ab, dass die Blüten der Pflanzen von Tieren bestäubt werden.
