Eine regulatorische T-Zelle (Mitte) hat sich eng an eine normale T-Zelle des Immunsystems geschmiegt und pumpt sie mit dem Signalstoff cAMP voll. In der „Nehmerzelle“ bewirkt das eine Abnahme des Proteins NFAT; die Färbung fällt darum weniger rot aus als bei der unbeteiligten T-Zelle am Bildrand links. Die gelbe Färbung der mittleren Zelle zeigt das Protein Foxp3 an – das ist der Beweis, dass es sich tatsächlich um eine regulatorische T-Zelle handelt. Denn nur in diesem T-Zell-Typ kommt Foxp3 vor.
