Die Schätzungen zum ungedeckten Bedarf werden aus Umfragen gewonnen, in denen Frauen unter anderem darüber Auskunft geben, wie viele Kinder sie haben, ob und in welcher Zahl sie sich weiteren Nachwuchs wünschen sowie ob und wie sie verhüten. Ein Verhütungsbedarf besteht dann, wenn eine fruchtbare Frau insgesamt keine Kinder mehr haben möchte oder die nächste Geburt um mindestens zwei Jahre hinauszögern will. Ungedeckt ist der Bedarf, wenn sie dennoch nicht verhütet. Je nach Definition wird auch für die Anwenderinnen traditioneller Methoden ein ungedeckter Bedarf an Verhütungsmitteln angenommen. Der ungedeckte Bedarf in der Grafik bezieht sich auf Frauen, die weder moderne noch traditionelle Verhütungsmethoden anwenden.
