Abb.1 Dieses Bild zeigt die helle Emission von Kohlenstoff und Staub in der Galaxie rund um das am weitesten entfernte massereiche Schwarze Loch, das wir kennen. Das Kohlenstofflicht wird von der Galaxie im Infrarot-Wellenlängenbereich emittiert (der normalerweise vom Erdboden aus nicht beobachtbar ist). Durch die Entfernung der Galaxie, die einer Zeit nur 740 Millionen Jahre nach dem Urknall entspricht, ist die Strahlung jedoch aufgrund der Expansion des Universums zu den viel längeren Millimeter-Wellenlängen hin rotverschoben. Diese kann man mit Einrichtungen wie dem IRAM Plateau de Bure Interferometer beobachten.
