Die Nieren sind die "Klärwerke" des menschlichen Körpers: Sie reinigen das Blut von Schadstoffen, regulieren den Blutdruck, Wasser- sowie Salzhaushalt und bilden außerdem eine Reihe lebenswichtiger Hormone. Bereits kleine Schäden am Nierengewebe beeinträchtigen den gesamten Organismus. Da die Niere eine sehr beschränkte Regenerationsfähigkeit besitzt, geht ihre Funktionsfähigkeit mit zunehmendem Lebensalter verloren. Der stetige Anstieg der Lebenserwartung führt daher zu einer rapiden Zunahme alternsbedingter Nierenerkrankungen.
