Funde von Basaltschlacken sind wichtige Beweise dafür, dass die Oberlausitzer Basaltberge echte Vulkane waren. Nur an der Erdoberfläche entgast die Lava, so dass sich blasige Schlacken bilden konnten. Bei den Lausitzer Vulkanen sind diese Schlacken heute meist verwittert und abgetragen. Am Hofeberg bei Leubajedoch fanden die Görlitzer Geologen Reste dieser Vulkanzeugen.
