Der Nutzer des BigBrain-Modells kann Schnittbilder selbst erzeugen und wegen der extrem hohen Auflösung von 1/20 000 mm des zugrunde liegenden Datensatzes detaillierte Untersuchungen zur Struktur des menschlichen Gehirns durchführen. Die 3D Darstellung von Zellen, Zellgruppen und Schichten der Hirnrinde eines realen und vollständigen Gehirns ist im BigBrain erstmals realisiert. Das Fadenkreuz in den Abbildung lokalisiert den sogenannten Hippocampus des Menschen, der für Lernen und Gedächtnis eine entscheidende Rolle spielt und unter anderem bei der Alzheimer'schen Erkrankung besonders betroffen ist.
