Asymmetrische Selektion verursacht übertriebene Abwehrmechanismen. In dieser Abbildung nimmt die Überlebenswahrscheinlichkeit von rechts nach links exponentiell zu, und zwar bis zu dem Wert des Abwehrmerkmals (hier 0.5) ab dem Individuen "unverwundbar" sind. Andererseits nimmt die Fekundität (Fruchbarkeit) von links nach rechts linear zu, da eine hohe Abwehr mit Kosten verbunden ist (am besten zu sehen links von 0.5). Von hinten nach vorne nimmt die Häufigkeit der (Fress)Feinde zu. Je mehr Feinde es gibt, desto asymmetrischer wird die Selektion.
