Mit einer EMCCD-Kamera (Elektronenvervielfachte-CCD-Kamera) aufgenommene Ytterbium-Ionen in einem Ionen-Coulomb-Kristall. Die ionisierten Atome fluoreszieren im Laserlicht, der Abstand zwischen den Ionen beträgt ca. 10-20 µm. In den oberen Reihen sind verschiedene symmetrische Ionen-Anordnungen (Phasen) im zentralen Bereich des Coulomb-Kristalls zu sehen: (a) linear wie auf einer Perlenschnur (achsenrotationssymmetrisch), (b) zweidimensional im Zick-Zack (Z2-Symmetrie) und (c) als dreidimensionale Helix. Wird jedoch eine schnelle Änderung von einer Phase in die andere erzwungen, kommt es zu Unregelmäßigkeiten: (d) lokalisierter Defekt zwischen zwei in sich symmetrischen Bereichen und (e) ausgeweiteter Defekt bei der die Anordnung der Ionen langsam von der Zick-Zack-Orientierung in die spiegelbildliche übergeht.
