Die drei kleinen Elektroden sind über dem linken dorsolateralen präfrontalen Kortex angebracht, die große Schwammelektrode auf der rechten Seite des Gehirns. Wird eine Spannung angelegt, fließt ein sehr schwacher Strom (0.45 mA) durch Kopfhaut, Schädelknochen und Gehirn von der einen zur anderen Elektrode und verändert dabei vorübergehend die elektrische Aktivität der Nervenzellen.
