Der Global-Player: Die von Prof. Dr. Thomas Geßner geleiteten Chemnitzer Forschungseinrichtungen sind weltweit aktiv. Sowohl das Zentrum für Mikrotechnologien der TU Chemnitz und der Institutsteil Chemnitz des Fraunhofer-Institutes für Zuverlässigkeit und Mikrointegration IZM Berlin kooperieren mit mehr als 70 Hochschulen, Forschungsinstituten und Unternehmen. Schwerpunktregionen im Ausland sind Amerika, China und Japan. Seit 2002 koordiniert in der Shanghaier Sonderwirtschaftszone Pudong/China ein Repräsentationsbüro den Produkttransfer und die Forschungskooperation auf dem Gebiet der Mikrosystemtechnik zwischen Chemnitz und Asien.
