Die Foraminiferen sind gehäusetragende einzellige Meerestiere. Die meisten Arten sind zwischen 200 und 500 Mikrometern groß. Die lange währende Abkühlung in der späteren Kreidezeit trug wesentlich zur Entstehung neuer Arten bei.
