Anhand von Brandspuren können die Heidelberger Forscher feststellen, wann eine Feuerstelle das letzte Mal loderte. Die entnommenen Proben werden in Dunkelheit unter schwachem Rotlicht entnommen. Schon der geringste Strahl des Tageslichts hätte die "Lumineszenzuhr" nämlich wieder auf Null gestellt. Die Bohrungen in den Grotten in den Externsteinen, hier bei Licht nachgestellt, verlangten den Wissenschaftlern einiges an handwerklichem Können ab (vorn im Bild Dr. Clemens Woda, im Hintergrund Steinmetzmeister B. Herde).
