Im Jahre 2007 hatten die Frauen im bundesdeutschen Mittel 1,37 Kinder, doch gibt es viele Ausreißer, betrachtet man die Kreisebene. Spitzenreiter ist das Oldenburger Münsterland mit den Landkreisen Cloppenburg und Vechta im westlichen Niedersachsen. Dort bekommen die Frauen im Schnitt 1,74 respektive 1,57 Kinder. Schlusslichter bilden die Kreise wie Passau, Würzburg und Heidelberg mit weniger als einem Kind pro Frau.
