Strukturen von festem Sauerstoff bei hohem Druck: Bei 1,9 TPa polymerisiert Sauerstoff und nimmt eine quadratisch-spiralförmige Struktur an, die ein Halbleiter ist (oben). Steigt der Druck weiter, zeigt das Polymer metallische Eigenschaften (Struktur ähnlich einer Zickzackkette, Mitte). Schließlich verwandelt sich die Struktur in eine metallische Flächenphase (unten). Die bunten Bereiche repräsentieren die Ladungsdichte in einer Schicht der jeweiligen Struktur.
