Das Bild zeigt zwei Synapsen auf einem Axon einer motorischen Nervenzelle, die auf einem Muskel endet. Die Aufnahme entstammt einem Maus-Modell der Amyotrophen Lateralsklerose (ALS), bei der die Kommunikation zwischen Nervenzellen und Muskeln gestört ist. Die Energie-produzierenden Mitochondrien sind blau markiert. Die Nervenenden werden als dunkelgraue Strukturen dargestellt, die Kontaktstellen zwischen Nerv und Muskel sind rot eingefärbt. Ein Teil der roten Struktur ist freigelegt: Hier fehlen die Nervenenden, der Nerv-Muskel-Kontakt ist unterbrochen.
