Drei von vier Tieren sind Insekten. Die mit Abstand erfolgreichste Tiergruppe auf Erden sind die geflügelten Insekten. Hier gezeigt eine Königslibelle der Gattung Anax, die unter anderem für ihre besonderen Flugleistungen bekannt ist. Einen wesentlichen Anteil an dem Evolutionserfolg der fliegenden Insekten haben vermutlich steuernde Entwicklungsgene aus der Familie der Hox-Gene, die in fliegenden Insekten deutlich schneller evolviert sind als in allen anderen Tiergruppen.
