Mikroskopische Aufnahmen der DNA und RNA in menschlichen Zellen: Die in den Zellen enthaltenen DNA-Moleküle (blau) und RNA-Moleküle (grün) wurden mit spezifischen Farbstoffen markiert und sichtbar gemacht. In der Kontrolle sieht man die unbehandelten Zellen (obere Reihe), deren Genom (DNA) in Anwesenheit von RNA eine gleichmäßig verteilte und aufgelockerte Struktur im Zellkern aufweist. Nach Entfernung der RNA (untere Reihe) aggregiert die DNA zu inaktiven und ungleichmäßig verteilten Verpackungsstrukturen.
