Die CALIFA-Durchmusterung liefert detaillierte Informationen über 600 Galaxien im lokalen Universum. Diese Abbildung zeigt zwei Beispiele: die ruhige elliptische Galaxie NGC 6125 (oben) und die Spiralgalaxie NGC 2916, in der sich auch heute noch neue Sterne bilden (unten). Links ist jeweils ein Bild der Galaxie aus einer früheren Durchmusterung (SDSS) zu sehen. Rechts sind CALIFA-Daten abgebildet, die anzeigen, ob sich der betreffende Teil der Galaxie zu uns hinbewegt (bläulich) oder von uns weg (rötlich). Die elliptische Galaxie rotiert nur sehr gemächlich. In der Spiralgalaxie dagegen rotieren die Sterne mit beeindruckenden Geschwindigkeiten von bis zu 180 Kilometern pro Sekunde und mehr.
