Das Schema zeigt ein aus DNA aufgebautes Rechteck an dem im Abstand von 70 nm zwei Farbstoffreihen angebracht sind. Mit einem optimal eingestellten Superauflösungsmikroskop können diese Markierungen auf dem Nanolineal aufgelöst werden, wie im Bild rechts gezeigt. Der Ansatz erlaubt die Konstruktion vielfältiger Strukturen für verschiedenste Arten hochauflösender Mikroskopie.
