"Religious Symbols, Constitutional Law, and Human Rights" ist das Thema eines Symposiums der Juristischen Fakultäten der Universität Heidelberg und der Hebräischen Universität Jerusalem - 14. bis 16. Juli, Internationales Wissenschaftsforum
Vom 14. bis 16. Juli 2005 findet am Internationalen Wissenschaftsforum der Universität Heidelberg (IWH, Hauptstr. 242, 69117 Heidelberg) ein deutsch-israelisches Symposion statt über "Religious Symbols, Constitutional Law, and Human Rights". Es wird von den Juristischen Fakultäten der Universität Heidelberg und der Hebräischen Universität in Jerusalem in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Wissenschaftsforum organisiert. Das Symposion bildet einen Ausschnitt der Aktivitäten, die durch einen Kooperationsvertrag zwischen den beiden Universitäten gefördert werden.
Thema des Symposions ist die Frage, ob und bis zu welchem Grad der Staat und die Kirchen oder Religionen in Näheverhältnisse zueinander treten dürfen, insbesondere soweit es um religiöse Symbole im staatlichen Raum geht. Seit der Neuzeit werden "Staat" und "Kirche" strukturell getrennt; Religionsfreiheit soll das individuelle Gewissen der Bürger schützen. Das schließt zwar klare und intensive Eingriffe wie Bekenntniszwang und eine Staatskirche aus, aber nicht notwendigerweise "weichere" Annäherungen oder Zwänge wie im Fall des Kreuzes in einer staatlichen Schule oder des Verbots des Kopftuchtragens bei muslimischen Lehrerinnen oder gar, wie in Frankreich, bei Schülerinnen. Das deutsche wie das israelische Staatswesen sind zur Zeit stark durch solche "symbolische" Konflikte geprägt. Wie sie angemessen zu lösen sind, soll während des Symposions durch Analyse der einschlägigen nationalen wie internationalen Rechtsnormen sowie durch Blicke nach Frankreich und in die USA diskutiert werden. An dem Symposion werden 50 Wissenschaftler vor allem aus Heidelberg und Jerusalem, aber auch aus mehreren anderen Ländern teilnehmen.
