In the field of "Applied Sciences: Nuclear Medicine" the KFAS-Prize for the worldwide best nuclear medicine researcher of Arabic origin was awarded to Prof. Dr. med. Osama Sabri for his scientific achievements in evaluating "The role of nuclear medicine (PET, SPECT) in functional neuroimaging of dementia and schizophrenia" within the last 15 years.
The Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences (KFAS) was founded in 1976 by the Amir of Kuwait, Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah. Thus, it is the oldest and most renowned scientific organization of the whole Arab world. Beside scientific honours (so-called "awards") reserved for Kuwaiti citizens the most important prize donated by the KFAS is the KFAS Prize for the best scientist of Arabic origin. It is awarded in five categories (Basic Sciences, Applied Sciences, Economic and Social Sciences, Arts and Literature, and Arabic and Islamic Scientific Heritage). The fine specialization in each of the above categories is changing annually (for example chemistry as a branch in "Basic Sciences" for the first year of the Prize, biology for the second year, physics for the third, and so on).
By considering the scientific achievements over the last 15 years international prize committees specific for each discipline select the corresponding awardee from a group of nominated prize candidates.
This KFAS-Prize is the most renowned and the highest-ranking scientific prize within the whole Arab world and is, therefore, known in the Arabic-speaking world as the "Arabian Noble Prize". It is also highly esteemed within the USA (even president George Bush mentioned it during some of his speeches on the role of Sciencein the U.S.).
It is endowed with a sum of 105,000 U.S. Dollars, a Gold medal, a KFAS Shield, as well as a Certificate of Recognition. As such, it seems to be the prize with the highest endowment worldwide in the field of nuclear medicine, too.
This year the KFAS Prize was awarded in three categories (Basic Sciences: Marine biology, Applied Sciences: Nuclear Medicine, and Economic and Social Sciences: Development and Economic Restructuring Policies in the Arab World): In the two remaining categories (Arts and Letters, Arabic and Islamic Scientific Heritage) the prize was withheld since the scientific achievements of the candidates nominated were considered as not sufficient to comply with the high standard regulations of the prize committee.
The international prize committee declared that with 113 original publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals such as "The Lancet" or "Stroke" Prof. Sabri as a leading expert in his field has contributed significantly to the functional imaging of psychopathologic processes in the human brain.
The Director and Chairman of KFAS, Prof. Dr. Ali Al-Shamlan, inaugurated a ceremony held on 5th December 2005 under the patronage of the Amir of Kuwait Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah to honour the winners of the KFAS-Prizes. The Amir's representative, the Prime Minister of Kuwait, Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, presented the KFAS Prize personally to Prof. Dr. med. Osama Sabri. Several TV-stations and the press media of the Arab world attended the ceremony. After Sheikh Sabah distributed the trophies, shields and certificates to the winners there were several TV- and press-interviews, and finally a festive banquet. This was followed by invitations of the Egyptian ambassador.
Prof. Sabri is currently the Director and Chairman of the Dept. of Nuclear Medicine of the University of Leipzig, Germany where, among other things, he runs a fully equipped PET-centre (including a High end PET scanner, a cyclotrone, 6 hot cells, and several radiochemical labaratories) specially dedicated to Neuro-PET research. The main research fields comprise PET/SPECT studies on cholinergic, serotoninergic and dopaminergic neuroreceptors/neurotansmitters in dementia and disorders with cognitive impairments (Alzheimer's disease, so-called "vascular dementia", dementia with Lewy bodies, frontotemporal and semantic dementias, mild cognitive impairment), neurodegeneration (e.g.: Parkinson's disease), and psychoses (depression, schizophrenia).
