Neue Radiokarte zeigt detaillierte Verteilung von Sternentstehungsgebieten innerhalb unserer Nachbarmilchstraße
Eine neue Radiokarte der Andromedagalaxie hat jetzt ein deutsch-französisches Forscherteam vorgelegt. Sie zeigt, wo in unserer rund 2,5 Millionen Lichtjahre entfernten Nachbarmilchstraße kaltes Gas vorkommt, das Baumaterial für die Entstehung neuer Sterne. Außerdem lässt sich die Bewegung dieses Gases erkennen. Mit mehr als 800 Stunden Teleskopzeit war das Projekt eines der umfangreichsten in der Millimeter-Radioastronomie. Daran beteiligt waren Wissenschaftler des Max-Planck-Instituts für Radioastronomie (MPIfR) in Bonn und des Institut de Radioastronomie Millimétrique (IRAM) in Grenoble (Astronomy & Astrophysics, Vol. 453 No. 2, July II 2006).
