Die Gesellschaft für Informatik e.V. ernannte Prof. Axel Lehmann von der Universität der Bundeswehr München am 5. Oktober während der bundesweit größten Informatikkonferenz INFORMATIK 2006 in Dresden zum GI-Fellow. Neben Lehmann würdigte die Gesellschaft für Informatik acht Informatik-Experten für "herausragende Beiträge technischwissenschaftlicher Art zur Informatik".
Lehmann forscht in der Fakultät für Informatik auf dem Gebiet der Modellbildung und Simulation. Dabei analysiert er mit Hilfe symbolischer Modelle und computerbasierter Simulation komplexe Abläufe und Systeme. Die Einsatzfelder reichen von verkehrsgünstiger Steuerung von Ampelschaltungen über Produktionsabläufe in der Logistik bis zum Online-Shopping im World Wide Web. Die Gesellschaft für Informatik wählte Lehmann aus, weil er "auf dem Gebiet der Modellbildung und Simulation wichtige Impulse für die Informatik-Forschung gab und wertvolle Beiträge zum Technologietransfer geleistet hat".
