Zu Doctorows vielfältigem literarische Oeuvre zählen Bücher wie Welcome to Hard Times (1960), Big as Life (1966), The Book of Daniel (1971), Ragtime (1975), Drinks before Dinner (1979), Loon Lake (1980), Lives of the Poets: Six Stories and a Novella (1984), World's Fair (1985), Billy Bathgate (1989), Jack London, Hemingway and the Constitution (1993), City of God (2000), Reporting the Universe (2003), The March (2005).
E.L. Doctorow wurde mit zahlreichen Preisen und Ehrungen ausgezeichnet, unter anderem mit dem National Book Award, der National Humanities Medal, dem National Book Critics Award und dem PEN/Faulkner Award.
