Intelligent User Interfaces - Talk to your iPod and digital home

Reinhard Karger M.A. DFKI Saarbrücken
Deutsches Forschungszentrum für Künstliche Intelligenz GmbH, DFKI

At this year's CeBIT stand of the German Research Centre for Artificial Intelligence, DFKI (hall 009, stand B37) the research department "Intelligent User Interfaces" is presenting a novel interaction system, which also enables the simultaneous processing of spoken language and pointing gestures.

Kaiserslautern, Saarbrücken, Bremen and Berlin, 29th February 2008

The multimodal interaction system, which is used for the application "BabbleTunes" as well as the user interface of the "i2home" project, is based on the so-called ODP framework. ODP (Ontology-based Dialogue Platform) is a generic platform developed at the DFKI for the realisation of multimodal dialogue systems, which considerably simplifies the development of such systems.

"Babble Tunes" is a multimodal application, with an intuitive, language-centred interaction with Apple's iPod. What is unique about this is the direct access to your complete music collection and the ability to say, for example, "Play the song 'One' by 'U2'" and have the desired title cued for immediate play. No matter whether you are at home or on the road driving in your car, you can access the right song in any situation, without having to navigate tediously through a menu or index structure. Of course, there is still the option to operate the mp3 player by using the touch screen. New and often multilingual content can be accessed through the use of modern linguistic methods.

The objective of the project "i2home" is to implement an open standards-based platform (Universal Remote Console ISO/IEC 24752), that makes it possible to interact with any appliance or service at home (DVD player, television, air condition, reminder etc.) via a personal user interface. This multimodal dialogue system focuses on a speech and gesture-based interaction with the network and is targeting elderly and cognitively impaired people living in their "digital home". At the stand it is possible to test the system and, for instance, by giving the voice command "Set the air condition to 20 degrees" activate the air condition and set it to the automatic mode.

    Help

Search / advanced search of the idw archives
    Combination of search terms

You can combine search terms with and, or and/or not, e.g. Philo not logy.

    Brackets

You can use brackets to separate combinations from each other, e.g. (Philo not logy) or (Psycho and logy).

    Phrases

Coherent groups of words will be located as complete phrases if you put them into quotation marks, e.g. “Federal Republic of Germany”.

    Selection criteria

You can also use the advanced search without entering search terms. It will then follow the criteria you have selected (e.g. country or subject area).

If you have not selected any criteria in a given category, the entire category will be searched (e.g. all subject areas or all countries).
