Before Brachiosaurus: Spectacular fossils reveal life in ancient oceans - they are windows on the evolution of marine life (Vortrag in englischer Sprache)
The Humboldt museum's Brachiosaurus is a fabulous fossil by any standards. But if we are interested in life millions of years before Brachiosaurus we must consider specimens on a different scale. The most spectacular fossils preserve evidence of soft tissues as well as the skeleton and some can be reconstructed as 3-dimensional images using computers. Such remarkably preserved fossils are the key to the history of life in the oceans.
Der designierte Direktor des Peabody Museum of Natural History der Yale Universität, New Haven, USA, hat die Frederick William Beinecke Professur für Geologie und Geophysik an jener Universität inne. Er ist Mitglied der Royal Society (London) und Stipendiat der Alexander-von-Humboldt-Stiftung.
Der Berliner Zoologe Professor Dr. med. Dr. phil. Walther Arndt (8.1.1891-26.6.1944), bedeutendes Mitglied der Gesellschaft Naturforschender Freunde zu Berlin, wirkte bis zu seiner Hinrichtung am Museum für Naturkunde, zuerst als Kustos und seit 1931 als Titularprofessor. Aufgrund zweifacher Denunziation aus seinem persönlichen Umfeld wurde er von Freislers "Volksgerichtshof" wegen Wehrkraftzersetzung zum Tode verurteilt.
Die Walter-Arndt-Vorlesung ist eine vom Museum für Naturkunde und der Gesellschaft Naturforschender Freunde zu Berlin initiierte Vorlesungsreihe zu naturwissenschaftlichen Themen. Seit dem Jahre 2000 tragen renommierte Wissenschaftler zu aktuellen und grundlegenden Fragen ihrer Disziplin vor. Die jährlich stattfindende Veranstaltung soll an den Todestag Walter Arndts erinnern.
