Rescuing what we can

Institute of Comparative Urban History seeks reproductions of items from Cologne city archives

For historians and archivists, the collapse of the building housing Cologne's city archives is a catastrophe. Not only were two people killed, but numerous irreplaceable documents are likely to have been lost. For this reason, the Institute of Comparative Urban History at Münster University is calling on all academics and institutes who have worked together with Cologne city archives to look for reproductions of valuable items from the archives.

For decades now, academics from both Germany and abroad working in a variety of historical disciplines have had microfilms, photos, digital recordings, scans and photocopies made by the archives for their research projects. Now, in some cases, these materials offer the only possibility of reconstructing and safeguarding the contents of the items lost from the archives and making them accessible to the public again in the long term.

Because the staff at the city archives are working under such pressure at the moment, the Institute of Comparative Urban History has taken on the task of collecting details of the reproductions. The academics involved should give as much detail as possible of the copies of manuscripts and archive material in their possession. All the information, including names and contact details of the owners, will be bundled in the Institute of Comparative Urban History and systematically ordered and then passed on to the staff at the Historical Archives of the City of Cologne.

More information can be had from the Institute of Comparative Urban History (Institut für Vergleichende Städtegeschichte) at www.uni-muenster.de/Staedtegeschichte
