Prof. Dr. Gerald B. Moritz vom Institut für Biologie (Bereich Zoologie) der Martin-Luther-Universität Halle-Wittenberg (MLU) ist als Präsident der Deutschen Gesellschaft für allgemeine und angewandte Entomologie (DGaaE) zum zweiten Mal wiedergewählt worden. Es handelt sich um die größte Fachgesellschaft für Insektenforscher in Mitteleuropa.
Gerald B. Moritz ist Professor für Entwicklungsbiologie an der MLU und beschäftigt sich mit der Biologie, Verbreitung und Schadwirkung der Thysanoptera (Fransenflügler oder Gewitterfliegen, Thripse) und der durch sie übertragenen Tospoviren. Der 55-Jährige ist weltweit der führende Spezialist für computergestützte Methoden zur Identifikation von Thripsen. Der DGaaE steht er seit 2005 als Präsident vor.
Moritz arbeitet eng zusammen mit der Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) in Canberra, dem Center for Biological Information Technology (CBIT) in Brisbane, dem International Centre for Insect Physiology and Ecology (ICIPE) in Nairobi sowie dem Commonwealth Agricultural Bureaux (CAB International) in Wallingford.
