Dendritische Zellen sind wichtige Boten bei der Immunantwort. Es handelt sich um Leukozyten, die im Körper Antigene aufnehmen, mit ihnen zu den Lymphknoten wandern und die T-Zellen aktivieren. Die dendritischen Zellen können aus dem Blut eines zum Beispiel an Krebs erkrankten Menschen entnommen, außerhalb des Körpers mit den Antigenen des speziellen Tumors beladen und wieder in den Organismus injiziert werden, um eine hochspezielle Immunantwort auszulösen. Dieses Verfahren wurde erstmals am malignen Melanom (Hautkrebs) erprobt. Zudem ist die Funktion der dendritischen Zellen bei manchen Tumorpatienten gestört. Sie können außerhalb des Körpers aus Vorstufen gezüchtet werden, und dann - beladen mit speziellen Antigenen - für eine komplette und gezielte Immunantwort sorgen.
