Das Fraunhofer-Institut für Zuverlässigkeit und Mikrointegration IZM hat sich vergrößert. Seit dem 1. Januar 2002 firmiert der ehemalige Institutsteil München des Fraunhofer-Instituts für Mikroelektronische Schaltungen und Systeme IMS, als Fraunhofer-Institut für Zuverlässigkeit und Mikrointegration IZM, Institutsteil München unter der Leitung von Prof. Dr.-Ing. Dr. E.h. Herbert Reichl.
In München ist somit ein weiteres leistungsfähiges Forschungs-, Entwicklungs- und Dienstleistungszentrum auf dem Gebiet der ubiquitären Systeme entstanden. Das breitgefächerte Leistungsspektrum reicht von chemischer Sensorik, Bioanalytik, Mikroaktorik, Mikrofluidik, Polymerelektronik, Rolle-zu-Rolle Techniken für die Elektronik, Siliziumtechnologie, vertikale Systemintegration bis zur Analyse und dem Test integrierter Systeme.
Für die Zukunft ist geplant, den Institutsteil IZM-München in ein eigenständiges Fraunhofer-Institut zu überführen.
