Am Donnerstag, den 25. Juli 2002, verleiht die Deutsche Mathematiker Vereinigung (DMV) erstmals den mit 5.000 Euro dotierten DMV-Medienpreis. Preisträger ist der Publizist Gero von Randow, der um 18.15 Uhr im Ehrensaal des Deutschen Museums in München die Auszeichnung entgegen nimmt.
DMV-Präsident Prof. Peter Gritzmann, Ordinarius für Kombinatorische Geometrie der TU München, wird den Preisträger ehren "in Anerkennung seines herausragenden publizistischen Werkes, als Journalist und Schriftsteller, das in besonderer Weise das Ansehen der Mathematik in der Öffentlichkeit fördert".
Gero von Randow arbeitete als freier Journalist, war Mitglied im Wissenschaftsressort der ZEIT und verantwortlicher Redakteur der Essay-Seite "Themen der ZEIT". Seit 2001 ist er Ressortleiter Wissenschaft in der Sonntagszeitung der Frankfurter Allgemeinen Zeitung.
Zu den Festrednern zählen TUM-Präsident Prof. Wolfgang A. Herrmann und Dr. Johannes Willms, Leitender Redakteur der Süddeutschen Zeitung. Für die musikalische Umrahmung sorgt der Kabarettist Piano Paul, ein promovierter Mathematiker.
